Affordable Health Insurance for Teenagers: Can It Happen to You?

from:

There are health insurance plans for an individual or a group. Individual health insurance plans cover an entire family (a group of people) and group health insurance plans covers a group of one.

Teenagers are often aware of the growing need for having a health insurance policy. People aged thirteen to nineteen are considered teenagers. Affordability is something important to consider. Can teenagers afford a health insurance plan?

Many young people may think that having a health insurance plan isn't necessary, assuming that somehow they're invincible. People whose age falls under this group have very little know-how. Of course, they're still covered by their parent’s health insurance policies, but if they open up their minds at an earlier age, it can be helpful to them when they reach the right age.

Most teenagers don't have the income to pay premiums for health insurance plans. Therefore, their parents still have to pay for these premiums. This might not be a problem for those with high income, since having to pay for two health insurance plans isn't going to be an extra burden.

But what about families with low income? It might be enough to making their teenagers aware of the importance of having a health insurance plan. The time will come when they will leave home and face life on their own. With this awareness, these teenagers will grow up to be responsible citizens and most likely invest on a health insurance for their own sake, thanks to their parents.

Teenagers are experts at using the Internet to find information. Purchasing health insurance online can save you a lot of time, energy and money and also save paying agent’s fees and broker’s fees.

Since you’re a teenager, it's probably impossible to pay premiums on an annual basis, but it's important that you don’t miss paying your dues even on a monthly basis.

One thing you can do is check for discounted health insurance. You can ask your parents for help or from your local chamber of commerce.

You can also get short term health insurance, typically for a period of six months and is renewable once. Some health insurance companies extend the period to twelve months. This can cover your hospital costs, surgical and doctor's care, intensive care, laboratory tests and x-rays. This is also known as 'bare bones' health insurance. In this case premiums are low enough for a teenager to afford and application is fast and the coverage begins immediately. This type of health insurance is flexible, short, secure, simple and affordable, though it's temporary in nature.

The short term health insurance plan is probably the best solution for teenagers who want to get an insurance policy. However, keep in mind that this type of health insurance plan has a disadvantage in that it doesn't cover illnesses diagnosed for the past three to five years. This would only be disadvantageous for people who have a diagnosed illness, but if you're in good health, why not go for it.

It's better to start early as this may be a strong foundation for a teenager to become a responsible person when the time comes. Your parents support will certainly be needed in this early venture.
