A Guide for Students in Choosing a Health Insurance Policy

from:

Students are usually insensitive to the different health risks that they may encounter. They take health insurance plans for granted. Most students rely on university student clinics rather than paying for their very own health insurance. But by making them aware of the growing need for health insurance, it can surely change their minds and be able to change their lifestyles at an early age.

It is doubly difficult for most college students who are having trouble with their educational costs to worry in finding an affordable health insurance.

Universities and the parents of students can help a lot in finding a health insurance provider for the students. However, there are certain insurance programs that are contingent upon the financial aid package, and family health insurance plans can’t sustain the coverage of students indefinitely.

The students themselves can decide to sign up for a health insurance package to protect them during the period of transition, from universities to the actual workplace.

Students can avail of individual health insurance that are accessible and intended for college students only. College students, over 18 years of age, should somehow have health insurance plans. This will serve as their future investment, since a student’s life is accompanied by demand and anxiety which makes them prone to illness and injury.

Having a student health insurance is therefore a necessity. The student health insurance should be distinctly separated from university clinic options.

Health insurance plans for college students usually provide primary coverage for a calendar year. In addition to the student’s coverage under their parent’s health insurance plans, the student can still avail of this student health insurance.

In choosing the right student health insurance, the parents can help the student in exploring all the medical plan options available in the market. The choices may include getting the student health insurance from student’s employer; getting a medical insurance through a local public or private health insurance provider; college/universities also offer college student health insurance; and a health insurance for the student as dependent on their parent’s policy.

Finding and choosing the right health insurance for students is very important. Be on the look-out for:

- Discount plans. This kind of plan can only offer savings on money for health care and offers discounts for services. This is not a health insurance plan.

- Accident-only plans. This plan offers substandard coverage compared to a student health insurance.

- Hospital only plans. This covers hospital coverage only. Since some doctors prefer healthcare in their private offices, then consider a plan which covers both office and hospital coverage.

- School-sponsored clinics/Urgent-care centers. This covers only little things, but what about the big ones? This does not also include hospital coverage.

It is therefore important to look for student health insurance plans that give the best health coverage. Most insurance companies have their own websites, you can always check for the names of doctors found in your locality and see if they are included in the list.

What is covered? This might be your first question. A good health insurance policy will not usually have listings in dollar amount for each and every procedure. The phrase ‘usual and customary’ indicates that the medical provider will charge you using a formula that is used by other doctors in the same area.

And of course, health insurance plans have certain exclusions and limitations with regards to the plan. Ask your health insurance provider for these exclusions and limitations.

Students have unlimited choices of health insurance providers. Only the task of choosing and finding the right health insurance plan is a bit difficult.
