College Students Options for an Affordable Health Insurance

from:

It is very important for people nowadays to have their own health insurance policy. However, not all people can afford it. With the rising cost of health care, health insurance cost keeps increasing at a very fast rate. This can be a very bad thing for people who have no jobs or with jobs that only offer little income.

People like college students are required by most colleges or universities in the United States to have at least a minimum health insurance policy. However, not all college students can afford to pay for one. They can have part-time jobs but the money earned isn’t usually enough to pay for the monthly premiums of most health insurance policies.

If you are a college student and do not have health insurance, you can easily get an affordable health insurance from different insurance companies. To do this you have to shop around for health insurance quotes from a multitude of health insurance providers. What “shopping around” means is that you have to ask for quotes.

Doing this search will enable you to find out about the different kinds of health plans that you can afford. Also, you will be able to find out which of these plans is the most affordable.

You can also consider your parent’s health insurance policy. Check if you are still under their health insurance policy coverage. If you are covered by your parent’s health insurance policy, you can still continue your benefits if the insurance company offered it. This will guarantee you health insurance for 18 months. Just enough time to find another kind of health plan.

This is called COBRA. COBRA allows you to extend your benefits for another 18 months. However, you will have to pay for the whole monthly premium. Unlike before, your parents paid for it. There are also plans that require you to be at least at a certain age before you can get this benefit. Health insurance companies usually require you to be 19 to 23 years old in order to qualify for COBRA or they can require you to present a document that states how many college credit hours you have.

Some colleges and universities may offer an option to choose from different health care plans. Usually, these health plans may be group plans offering coverage through HMO or PPO. These organizations may not be available if your school is outside the coverage area.

Also, coverage through one of these organizations is usually cheaper. However, most college plans offered through these organizations are basic and you may want a more comprehensive health care plan. If your college has its own hospital, a health insurance plan offered by the school can save you a lot of money.

If you still can’t find a health insurance plan that is right for you, you can also apply for a short-term health insurance plan. These plans are temporary and are great if you want to get covered while you look for a permanent health insurance policy. These plans are usually cheaper and can be attractive to make it as an alternative. However, you should try to keep in mind, although cheap and offers emergency coverage, these plans can only last for a maximum of a year and can never be renewed.

You should also keep in mind that like other kinds of health insurance, it has exclusions and restrictions. You may not be covered if you have pre-existing medical condition.
